Four centuries have gone by since the first european set foot on the North American continent, and changed forever the history of the Mohawks of Kanesatake. Changes mostly influenced by the missionaries from the Séminaire St-Sulpice. For many years the two cultures lived side by side. The sulpicians teaching the ways of the church, and the Mohawks teaching them the skills needed to survive in Canada's difficult climate.
The task of resuming 400 years of recorded history is not an easy one. You may notice that some details may not appear, or that certain events may be omitted, none of this is voluntary, but only to lighten the reading. Many book were written on the subject, and these are the best resources to find out more about the Mohawks of Kanesatake, and other Native tribes across North America.
You will also see a section on the events known as "The Oka Crisis". This section is also a great part of our history. It was a summer where the community decided to take a stand against people taking their land. The result was 78 Days of negotiations, and confrontations, involving governments of all levels, and the Mohawks of Kanesatake and their supporters from Kahnawake.
This section explains what are land claims. The root of the matter may lie in the 18th century but it is an issue that will continue to be of great importance beyond 2000. What has been done by the governments and what is to come.
